Mexico City: The Private Gateway Is Toluca
Mexico City doesn't fit in a single glance. It spreads from horizon to horizon, ringed by mountains and volcanoes, more than 2,200 meters above the sea: one of the largest metropolises on the planet, and one of the hardest to cross. Here, time is won or lost in the transfer, long before the first meeting.
That is why, for those flying private, arriving in Mexico City almost never means Benito Juárez Airport (MMMX). Saturated and with limited operations, it stopped being the natural choice for executive aviation years ago. The real access is to the west: Toluca International Airport (MMTO) is now the base for private aviation in central Mexico. At nearly 2,600 meters of altitude, it is also one of the highest airports in North America, a demanding setting that rewards crews who know it well.

What the city gives back
With access solved, the capital opens up, and few offer so much within such a short radius. A single day can hold a meeting in Polanco or Santa Fe, lunch at one of the restaurants that place Mexico among the world's best, and an afternoon in Chapultepec, one of the largest urban parks in the hemisphere, or among the halls of the National Museum of Anthropology. Roma and Condesa set the younger pulse; the Centro Histórico, the weight of centuries. And behind the cultural draw is the economic engine: home to the country's major corporations and a required stop for any operation in Mexico.
Mexico City's airports, clarified
The metropolitan area has three airports, and choosing well defines the trip. Benito Juárez (MMMX) is the historic commercial hub, now saturated and with restricted executive operations. Felipe Ángeles International Airport (MMSM), opened in 2022 to the north, added commercial capacity. And Toluca International Airport (MMTO), to the west, is the reference for private aviation: less congestion, FBO terminals and executive handling. The distance to Toluca is more than offset by what you save on the ground and in formalities.
When to go
Mexico City is enjoyable year-round, with a mild mountain climate. The dry season, November to May, brings the clearest days; between June and September the rains arrive, almost always in the afternoon. The calendar matters too: Día de Muertos in late October, and the Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez around the same dates, fill the city; in February, art week draws collectors from around the world. Flying private makes it easier to come and go during those peaks, when commercial flights fill up.
Why how you arrive matters
In a city where one meeting and the next can be two hours of traffic apart, arriving through the right airport is starting with an edge. Flying private to Toluca also allows what commercial aviation complicates: linking Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara in a single day, adjusting the departure if a meeting runs long, or adding a night without redoing the schedule. And the region's altitude, which demands performance and experienced crews, is exactly the terrain where an operator who knows central Mexico makes the difference.
Preguntas frecuentes
Which airport does a private jet use for Mexico City?
Mainly Toluca International Airport (MMTO), the base for private aviation in central Mexico. Felipe Ángeles (MMSM) is another option; Benito Juárez (MMMX) has restricted executive operations.
Why fly to Toluca and not Benito Juárez?
Because Benito Juárez is saturated and operates under limits. Toluca offers less congestion, FBO terminals and faster executive handling, even while sitting west of the city.
Does altitude affect the flight?
Yes. Toluca sits above 2,500 meters and is one of the highest airports in North America; altitude demands performance and crews experienced in that environment.
When is the best time to visit Mexico City?
The dry season (November to May) brings the best weather. October and November concentrate Día de Muertos and the Mexico City Grand Prix; February, art week.
Can Mexico City be combined with other cities the same day?
Yes. Flying private allows linking the capital with Monterrey, Guadalajara or other points in a single day, unfeasible on a commercial itinerary.
